North Hollywood residents have their hands full keeping up with the wide variety of recreational services provided by this thriving community. Theme parks such as Universal Studios and actual studios where popular sitcoms are filmed are open to the public. A number of museums such as the Autry Museum of Western Heritage and the Hollywood Wax Museum have thousands of fascinating displays to keep visitors interested. The Hollywood Bowl is visited frequently by artists such as Arturo Sandoval and Ray Charles, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The Universal City-North Hollywood region of the Los Angeles Unified School District is equipped with three public schools that take kids from kindergarten through 12th grade. Education is well rounded with programs and goals promoting educational excellence. Lankershim Elementary School educates kindergarteners through fifth graders who have the option to participate in a multitude of extracurricular activities such as band and choral programs. Walter Reed Middle School has been dubbed a California Distinguished School. North Hollywood High serves more than 3,500 students living in North Hollywood, Sun Valley, Studio City and Toluca Lake. This school allows students to enroll in magnet programs which are academically enriched to stimulate interest in the biological sciences. College-bound students will find plenty of universities and colleges nearby including UCLA in West Los Angeles, less than 20 minutes away; Cal State Northridge; and the University of Southern California.
